About the Service
I use Articulate 360 to create training courses for various industries. I implement instructional design processes when doing so.
I use an iterative and collaborative design process to create these courses so that the client is aware of what they are receiving and happy with the final result. To learn more, view my instructional design process.

What are branching scenarios?
Branching scenarios in e-learning are interactive learning experiences that present learners with a series of decision points or choices. Based on the choices made by the learner, the scenario branches out into different paths, leading to different consequences, feedback, and subsequent learning opportunities.
Here's an example to illustrate how branching scenarios work in e-learning:
Let's say the learner is participating in a scenario-based training on customer service skills. The scenario begins with a customer complaint, and the learner is presented with several response options. Depending on the option they select, the scenario branches out into different outcomes.
For instance, if the learner chooses to apologize sincerely to the customer, the scenario might lead to a positive outcome, where the customer appreciates the response and their concerns are resolved. Alternatively, if the learner chooses to argue with the customer, the scenario might branch into a negative outcome, where the customer becomes more frustrated, escalating the situation.
Branching scenarios typically involve multiple decision points throughout the learning experience, allowing learners to explore different paths and consequences. They often incorporate multimedia elements such as videos, images, or audio to enhance engagement and realism. Additionally, feedback is provided at each decision point, explaining the consequences of the learner's choice and guiding them towards the most appropriate actions.
The key benefits of branching scenarios in e-learning include:
Active Learning: Learners actively engage in decision-making, reflecting on real-world situations and challenges.
Personalization: Scenarios can be tailored to different learner profiles, providing a customized learning experience.
Immediate Feedback: Learners receive immediate feedback on their choices, reinforcing learning and enabling them to correct their mistakes.
Application of Knowledge: Branching scenarios allow learners to apply knowledge and skills in a practical context, promoting the transfer of learning to real-life situations.
Motivation and Engagement: The interactive nature of branching scenarios keeps learners engaged, motivated, and invested in the learning process.
Overall, branching scenarios in e-learning provide an effective and immersive learning experience by simulating real-life situations, promoting decision-making skills, and enabling learners to explore the consequences of their choices.
How do I approach/use branching scenarios?
The easiest way for me to explain this is to show you the image below.
Depending on the tools I use, the branching could look something like this.
Quiz loop 3
Quiz loop 4
I call the above type of branching Quiz Loops. The first one more specifically has three questions and three types of answers that could be chosen per question. The second one has four questions and answers. When the user makes an incorrect choice, they will be taken back to the question. Once they choose the correct question, they will be able to move on to the next question. When building out my courses. I like to include the certificates and transcripts at the end of the course. This isn't shown on the branching, but I do add these slides in when calculating the number of slides needed.
I use this type of scenario to connect scenario questions to each other that go together. When asking the learner a follow-up question related to the consequence of the previous question.
For example,
Question 1: When is it okay to put pineapple on pizza?
Choice A: Never
Choice B: Always
Choice C: When you have guests that prefer it.
Say the learner chooses A, the consequence of that action could mean that guests come over expecting pineapple, so they disappointingly choose to eat something else instead. The next scenario question could then be based on how the friends responded to the pineapple not being on the pizza.
Bottleneck
I also do a bottleneck type of branching scenario. The image above shows you how it's structured. In this style of branching, all questions lead to the next scenarios. I like to use this style of branching to link unrelated questions or scenarios that could occur at different times, such as a different times of the year or day.
Finally, the above branching is a blend between the quiz loop and bottleneck. It's more complex. I don't currently offer this style of branching as it is extremely time-consuming, but if you are willing to work with me on a longer contract, you can enquire about this. It will take about 6 months to complete depending on its complexity.
How it Works
If the learner selects the correct choice, then any follow-up question choice will lead them to the next scenario. If the learner selects the bad or okay choices, then the follow-up questions will not lead them to the next scenario unless they select either good or okay choices. See the image below for a better idea of what I mean.
