Instructional Design Process Steps
STEP 1
Discover
The first step in my process involves you completing a questionnaire (client request). This helps me to identify your business needs. I advise you to complete this with your subject matter expert.
I will also give you a second questionnaire (roadmap) to complete with your stakeholders.
Once these forms are returned, I will analyse it to see if I can create training for you.
Following this, I will schedule a quick call with you to discuss the project.
We can schedule a meeting for me to complete the roadmap form with you as well, however, it would be a service that you would pay me for.
You will need to send me the completed forms before we agree to work together.
I suggest that you first complete it with your team and send it back to me when you are ready to begin.
I will also use this information to determine if I will be able to work with you or not with regards to your timeline, scope and budget.
Initiation & Conception
STEP 2
Road-mapping
Once you decide to work with me, we will move into the planning phase, during which, your team and I will discuss the questionnaires that I previously sent you.
During this time, we will finalise the project plan and schedule any future meetings.
After that, I will create a design document and project timeline that can be accessed by anyone on the team throughout the project’s life cycle.
I will also create a login for you on my client resource centre so that you can stay informed about the project and access important documentation.
Planning
STEP 3
SME Call
I will then need to speak to the subject matter expert (SME) to learn about your industry and to come up with solutions to the performance problem.
The first stage in this process involves the SME completing a questionnaire about the project.
Following this, I will analyse the information, and review the various ID models and theories to determine which one could work best for required learning experience. I usually create projects using an iterative approach. I blend Action Mapping, Backwards Design, SAM and ADDIE together. I use Action Mapping for analysing the problem, Backwards Design for planning the design, SAM for the design process, and ADDIE for project management.
Next, I will create an action map with the given information and schedule a meeting with the SME to discuss their job, perspective, the questionnaire and any other information that I did not understand. During this time, we will problem solve further. We will also schedule 1-2 follow-up meetings to make sure that I have implemented the necessary changes correctly.
After that I will speak to your learners (if possible) to get an idea of the performance problem from their perspective, or I will give them a survey to complete.
Then, I will follow up with the SME to finalize their suggestions and key solutions.
Information Transfer
STEP 4
UX, Ideate & Prototype
Next, I will create a user story, user persona, and empathy map to help me understand the learners better.
After that, I will do some design research to help me spark ideas that could be great for this project.
Following that, I will put a mood board together to help me organise and narrow down my ideas.
Next, I will create a task analysis to help keep me on track and meet the project timeline and goal.
Then I will create a text-based storyboard. You or your quality checker will then need to review this and edit the copy that I wrote.
Once the text-based storyboard has been signed off by you, I will create and prototype each unique design layout. The layouts will be created based on the storyboard. You will then need to review them.
Research
Feedback
There are 3 review rounds for each of the storyboard, prototype and final product stages of the project.
The first review round is for major content changes, if any.
The second review round is for approval – It is for making sure the correct changes were made (only small tweaks if any).
The third review round is for signing off on any additional changes that were requested.
After each round, a quality checker that is provided by you should edit my work and make sure that everything is done according to the quality control checklist that your team and I put together during the team meeting.
Review rounds
STEP 5
Develop & Launch
After you sign off on the prototype, I will develop the course in it's entirety. Once the course has been completed, I will send it to you for a final review round.
Once you sign-off on the final version of the course, I will incorporate X-API into it (If you request it). I will only include it if the course was created using Storyline 360. If it was not, I will skip the X-API step and directly upload the course to your learning platform.
Then I will test it multiple times to make sure that everything is working correctly.
I will then communicate the course to you in the form of a recorded video presentation.
Execution
STEP 6
Project Closure
In the final stage of the project, I will conduct a retrospective where I will walk through the work that was done with you.
I will also send you a video explaining the project process and why certain choices were made.
In addition to that, I will give you a project closeout document with FAQs and next steps.
Documents & Meeting
"I reached out to Emmy to develop training for our customer service department. She was very patient and understanding while also being very inquisitive to learn about the food and beverage industry. The interactivity and creativity of her work was outstanding. My team was very impressed with how she mapped out scenarios with very realistic outcomes. I would absolutely work with her again."
