Leo's Bar | Case Study

Overview

This training was a concept project. However, I worked with a real subject matter expert to create it. The training goal was to design a course to help bartenders improve their upselling and customer service skills and to improve the bar manager’s overall sales goals for his bar.

Audience:

Bartenders

Responsibilities:

Project management, visual design, eLearning development and storyboarding, and scriptwriting

Tools Used:

Flipbook Creator, Google Docs, Animaker, and Figma

The Problem

Bartenders at Leo’s Bar aren’t selling enough premium products. They aren’t as conversational as the bar manager would like, so he requested that we design training to improve his staff's upselling and customer service skills. His overall goal was for me to help him improve the company’s monthly and yearly sales goals.

The Solution

I created a flipbook training course that learners could navigate whenever they had free time. The course goes fairly quickly, and learners can repeat it multiple times. The course functions as an eBook, and it incorporates scenario-based learning in the form of a storyboard so that engagement is enhanced.

The Process

To learn more about my ID process you can view this page.

After receiving the brief, speaking to the subject matter expert (who was also the editor), and determining the goal of the project, I created an action map to perform a needs analysis. I then planned how the branching would work. After that, I started working on the text-based storyboard. I created multiple versions of it, and then I sent the final draft to my subject matter expert.

Following that, I started working on the visual designs. I researched some layouts I could use and sketched some ideas on paper so that I could visualise my thoughts and ideate the look of the course.

I then used Animaker to create the visuals. I sent examples of the layout to the subject matter expert for his feedback and then iterated on the design. Once the subject matter expert was happy with the look and feel, I completed the rest of the designs and prototyped the course.

When the prototype was completed, I created the summative test, which is a quiz. I then incorporated it into the course. If learners pass it, they will receive a certificate of completion, which I also created whilst building the quiz.

I then sent the completed course to the subject matter expert for his final feedback.

After that round of feedback and final edits, I uploaded the course online.

Takeaways

This project was fun to create. I enjoyed creating the visual designs and the script. Although the course worked well without audio, I would have preferred to include it if time allowed. The main frustration with using this tool is that the navigation arrows can't be hidden. Therefore, this style of learning experience is best as a practice experience only (do not use it as a summative test) or it works great for learning presentations.

Results

The users who took the course said that they enjoyed the visuals. The analytics for this test showed that most learners performed really well.
